There are three Bachelor of Arts degree options: Studio Art, Art History, and General Study (in which a student can combine both studio and art history). All three require 36 credits in the department plus an overall liberal arts education that includes English, Math, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Modern Languages, plus room for 18 credits of electives. The BA degree requires a 15 credit minor in another department.

The Bachelor of Arts in Studio degree requires:

  • ART 101 Introduction to Drawing I
  • ART 109 Introduction to Electronic Media
  • ARH 131. Survey of Western Art 1 or ARH 133 Art of Non-Western Cultures
  • ARH 132. Survey of Western Art II
  • One ARH elective of your choice
  • Seven studio classes

The Bachelor of Arts in General Study degree requires:

  • ART 101 Introduction to Drawing I
  • ART 109 Introduction to Electronic Media
  • ARH 131. Survey of Western Art 1 or ARH 133 Art of Non-Western Cultures
  • ARH 132. Survey of Western Art II
  • One ARH elective of your choice
  • Any combination of seven studio or art history classes

The Bachelor of Arts in Art History degree requires:

  • ART 101 Introduction to Drawing I
  • a second course in any studio
  • ARH 131. Survey of Western Art 1 or ARH 133. Art of Non-Western Cultures
  • ARH 132. Survey of Western Art II
  • Eight art history classes, one of which needs to be a Seminar

bachelor of fine arts program

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree requires 72 credits in the department (and fewer General Education requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences):

  • ART 101 Introduction to Drawing I
  • ART 109 Introduction to Electronic Media
  • ARH 131. Survey of Western Art 1 or ARH 133 Art of Non-Western Cultures
  • ARH 132. Survey of Western Art II
  • ARH 343 or ARH 344 (Modern or Contemporary Art History)
  • Two ARH electives of your choice
  • A primary studio concentration of 18 credits
  • A secondary studio concentration of 12 credits
  • A tertiary studio concentration of 9 credits
  • 12 credits of studio electives

The BFA degree carries an automatic minor in Art History and does not require another minor outside the department.

bfa application procedures

Freshman applicants interested in the BFA program need to send their regular application materials to the University of Miami Admissions Office and also fill out the Art BFA Supplemental Application and include 20 samples of artwork (digital images on CD/DVD) which should be sent directly to the Department of Art and Art History. The department will notify applicants whether they have been admitted into the BFA program soon after the Admissions office makes its decisions. Students admitted into the BA program but not the BFA program may reapply again each semester up until the beginning of the junior year.

Students currently enrolled at the University of Miami in a BA program may also apply for admission to the BFA program any time up until the beginning of their junior year. There are three review dates per year as indicated on the application form. Please do not email us the application or your images: mail hard copy of the application and a CD/DVD of your images to:
