Curriculum (Prior to Fall 2007)
NOTE: Students who enrolled at UM prior to Fall 2007 shall meet the requirements of the previous curriculum. Students who entered UM during or after Fall 2007 shall meet the requirements for the new curriculum.
MAJOR in American Studies (ten courses-30 credits)
Introduction to American Studies (AMS 101) - The purpose of this course is to acquaint beginning students with the approaches and areas of inquiry common to the field. Specific content for the course in order to approach the major constructs within American studies may vary each semester.
Advanced seminar in American Studies (AMS 301 or AMS 401) - Topics vary by semester.
Two of the following courses in American history and politics:
HIS 261 - History of the United States (to 1877)
HIS 262 - History of the United States (since 1877)
POL 211 - Introduction to American National Government
Two of the following courses in American literature and culture:
ENG 213 - American Literature I
ENG 214 - American Literature II
ENG 260 - African-American Literature
ENG 261 - Literature of the Americas
REL 131 - Religion in American Life
ARH 345 - Art in the United States
Three courses, chosen in consultation with an American Studies advisor, in a specialized area of American Studies (200 level or higher). Students may work in areas such as ethnic studies, Caribbean Studies, Latin American Studies, Latino/a Studies, environmental studies, communication studies, women's literature, urban studies, African American studies, religious studies or folklore.
One elective - Any AMS or AMS approved course at 300 level or higher.
MINOR in American Studies (five courses-15 credits)
- Introduction to American Studies (AMS 101)
- Two courses in History (HIS 261, HIS 262)
or American literature (ENG 213, ENG 214). - Advanced seminar in American Studies (AMS 301 or AMS 401).
- One elective - Any AMS or AMS approved course at 300 level or higher.
