Re: Advising and Registration for Spring 2010 Semester
Although it seems as if the semester has just begun, we at the Center for Freshman Advising, in Ashe 112, are already preparing for the spring advising season. Advising for the spring begins on Monday, November 2 and continues until Friday, November 20. During this period, you will be able to make a formal appointment with your advisor in order to plan your schedule, discuss your questions and concerns, and later register for classes. Please be aware that you WILL NOT BE ABLE to register for classes without your advisor’s signature on your Course Request Form, nor will you be able to obtain your PIN to be able to register online without a signed Course Request Form. Getting advised early and registering on time will help ensure that you get the classes you prefer. The following are important dates that you need to know:
ADVISING is scheduled for November 2 – November 20.
REGISTRATION is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 9. Your individual registration date and time will be available on myUM on October 26. THIS IS NOT YOUR ADVISING APPOINTMENT, but the date on which you can register.
Here’s what you need to do in order to be prepared to register for classes:
-
Step 1: Set up an advising appointment.
Please visit our advising appointment website at www.as.miami.edu/advising/advisors to see how to make an appointment with your advisor. If you do not have access to the internet, please stop in to Ashe 112 to pick up a copy of your advisor’s appointment scheduling information.
Advising times fill quickly, so select your date and time soon! It is imperative that you make and keep your advising appointment. - Step 2: Print your Academic Curriculum Evaluation (ACE) from myUM at myum.miami.edu. Once you have signed on, click “Student” then choose “Academic” from the drop-down menu. Under “Course Registration Information” click “Degree Audit (ACE).” Print your ACE.
- Step 3: Review your ACE and note any concerns/questions you wish to discuss with your advisor. Take your ACE with you to your advising appointment.
- Step 4: Refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin located at www.miami.edu/bulletins for the description of courses and requirements for the major(s) and minor(s) which interest you.
- Step 5: View the spring “Course Offerings” either from myUM or by clicking the menu option “Search Our Course Listings” from www.as.miami.edu/academics/undergraduate. It will be helpful for you to begin making a list of courses you are interested in taking for the upcoming semester and bring the list with you when you meet your advisor. Be sure to include at least two alternatives to your first choices. Your advising appointment will be far more productive if you arrive prepared.
- Step 6: After you have met with your advisor, if you wish to register yourself online you MUST bring your signed Course Request Form to the Center for Freshman Advising, Ashe 112, (in the breezeway of the Ashe Bldg.) and your CANE ID card to obtain your PIN
Again, please make your advising appointment in a timely manner so that you may be able to register for your courses at your separate assigned registration date and time or thereafter either online or at the Office of the Registrar. If you must cancel your advising appointment, please notify your advisor in advance of your appointment and reschedule.
Student course registration appointment times will be available on myUM beginning Monday, October 26. The system will not allow you to register before that date, but you will be able to do so any time after your assigned registration appointment time. It is important that you meet with your academic advisor before your registration time, as you will be unable to register for classes, either online or at the Office of the Registrar, without an advisor’s signature on your Course Request Form. Please note that you will also be unable to register for classes if you have not completed the Alcohol Education Program online.
If you have any questions, stop by Ashe 112 or call (305) 284-3437. Good luck with the rest of the semester.
