About the College
Dean's Message
Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami. As the core of a great university, the college is dedicated to excellence and to providing our students with exceptional learning and research opportunities.
The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to discovery and learning. With 20 departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the college offers degrees in areas as diverse as biology, physics, English, psychology, political science and philosophy. These courses and programs provide the foundation for students’ educations. Yet, students learn more than just what’s covered in classes. They routinely work with faculty in their labs, participate in law school clinics, study around the globe, and pursue their own intellectual passions.
Among the finest in the world, our faculty are dedicated equally to research and student learning. Many of them have won awards for their excellence in teaching. This year, 20 new professors joined the college, bringing additional expertise, strength, and commitment to our educational mission. Next year we anticipate another 25 to 30 new faculty in the college.
It’s obvious that our outstanding professors and approach to education has stellar students excited about opportunities in the college. The incoming class of 2011 is statistically the strongest on record, with an average SAT score nearing 1300. And over three quarters of them graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class. These students will ultimately join our other graduates who go on to succeed in every walk of life, including medicine, education, law, politics, and business. Our goal is to help students develop the habits of mind that will provide them with the understanding, flexibility, and creativity to thrive and lead in a changing world.
