SEEDS RSMAS Women Scientists Meeting
Su Sponaugle, Rana Fine, Sharon SMith, Josephina Olscoaga, Paquita Zuidema, Margie Oleksiak, Beth Babcock and Villly Kourafalou discussed RSMAS 2010 SEEDS Distinguished Speaker candidates. UM's three-months of maternity leave was discussed, with the recommendation that SEEDS actively promote adoption of flexibility in policies so that women can work from home, work part time, or otherwise make arrangements to continue working as they deem necessary/ beneficial for their careers/family. It was noted that NSF now allows/requests two months of postdoc maternity leave. Some flexibility/support should come from grant indirect costs. Other issues broached were the overly sharp focus of the President's Advisory Committee on Science, bias in the peer review process, and the upcoming SEEDS You Chose awards. Announcement of the award competition were sent out after the meeting.
