SEEDS (Scientists and Engineers Expanding Diversity and Success) and MOOR (Miller Office Of Research) present Mock NIH Study Section
The Mock NIH Study Section will take place Wednesday, June 6, 2012 from 1:00PM – 4:00PM in the Clinical Research Building, Room 989 on the Medical Campus. A panel of 4-5 experts will serve on the study section. You will learn: What happens to your grant after it is submitted? What instructions are reviewers given on how to review? How do reviewers score a NIH grant? What goes on at study sections? What gets discussed? What are the five most common reasons why grants do not receive a competitive score? A question and answer session will follow. Space is limited to 50 participants and refreshments will be provided. This workshop is for any and all faculty who submit grants. It will be highly interactive and participatory. Please register by May 30, 2012. SEEDS Presents: Annual Networking Dinner with the President
SEEDS Annual Networking Dinner with the President will take place Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 6:00PM - 9:00PM in the Flamingo Ballroom (second floor University Center). This event, which will host guests from all three UM campuses, will begin with a networking reception followed by opening remarks by President Shalala and Dr. Kathryn Tosney, SEEDS Program Director. After dinner, we will highlight briefly SEEDS endeavors. The evening will culminate with a SEEDS Interactive Theatre skit, presented by SEEDS Theatre Director, Jennifer Burke. SEEDS You Choose Award Presents: Academic Skills Workshop
The Academic Skills Workshop will take place on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 12:00PM - 5:00PM in the UMH Seminar Conference Room on the Medical Campus. This workshop will focus on three aspects intertwined in the academic career: negotiation, communication skills and mentoring. The forum will examine the professional needs of minorities along with existing challenges, and will discuss strategies to foster networking and mentoring opportunities. The workshop will be interactive, with group discussions and question and answering opportunities. A dynamic panel of successful female faculty from University of Miami, University of Florida and Harvard University will lead the discussion. Please RSVP by Friday, April 20, 2012. SEEDS Co-Sponsored Distinguished Scholar, Dr. Deborah Nightingale
Dr. Deborah Nightingale, Professor of the Practice of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems at MIT's Engineering Systems Division, will present a seminar entitled, "Principles of Lean Enterprise Transformation." Dr. Nightingale will present the seven principles of enterprise transformation that have been derived from our research in enterprise transformation over the last decade. Case examples will be employed to highlight how these principles impact the behaviors of enterprises.
